SB19 showcases Filipino culture and highlights important themes in their ‘DUNGKA!’ MV

P-pop kings SB19 have released the music video for “DUNGKA!” but it’s more than just that—it highlights important themes that are highly relevant today.

Throughout the video, Filipino culture is showcased, featuring elements commonly seen in the Philippines, such as sari-sari stores, jeepneys on the streets, and traveling stalls where people can buy street food, just to name a few.

This song is clapping back at those bashers/naysayers who are doubting their capabilities as artists. In a certain scene, content creator Ghost Wrecker is acting as the basher walking down the street while the P-pop kings paid no attention to him and just continued doing what they were working on.

There was also a particular scene wherein he was eating crabs that can be a symbolism of Filipinos having crab mentality wherein they pull others down.

With lines like “Tumabi ka! Kung ‘di mo ‘to gusto [Step aside! If you don’t like this]” and “Tumabi ka diyan [Move out of the way]!” it is certain that they are telling them to just back off.

Along with clapping back to the bashers, they have taken this opportunity to raise social awareness as there are several people in the music video having signs like “Iangat ang sining na Pilipino” and with SB19 Justin seen in another shot wherein he is placing a “Sining Ang Sandata sa Kulturang Mapagpalaya” poster over a trapo poster.

Furthermore, it is a colorful tribute to LGBTQIA+ artists who continue to inspire with pride and authenticity. Sassa Gurl, Pat Laseten and Agnes Reoma from Ben&Ben, Mimiyuuuh, and Vice Ganda are just some of the artists who are part of the community featured in the video.

Upon seeing the music video, people then took to social media to share their thoughts.

One user wrote, “The Power. The Message. The Energy. Dungka isn’t just fun & full of life. The MV shows our Filipino culture, the nasty and the good. How some thrive in bringing people down and how we rise to it through togetherness to amplify the message SB19 has long been telling everyone.”

“Did they just walk passed that guy who was like the metaphor for the bashers and doubters and said, “TUMABI KA DYAN??”(we have bigger problems dude), then pans the vid to that politician?????? ART. SPEAKS. INDEED,” a second user wrote.

A third user wrote, “EVERYTHING !! IS !! POLITICAL !! Sobrang timely rin na nilabas ‘tong MV ng dungka ngayong election season [It’s very timely that they released the dungka MV this election season. VOTE WISELY, GUYS!!!”

“DUNGKA!” is one of the songs featured in SB19’s latest EP (extended play) “Simula at Wakas” that dropped last April 25.
